Tahir Naqvi, Imprisoned Lawyer, Suffers from 'Severe Stomach Bleeding' in Evin Prison

Sina Yousafi, a lawyer, reports that Tahir Naqvi, an Azerbaijani lawyer imprisoned in Evin Prison, has 'suffered from severe stomach bleeding.' On Sunday, September 2, Yousafi wrote on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) that prison officials, despite this situation and nearly 'three weeks' passing since Naqvi's condition worsened, 'continue to prevent his transfer to the hospital and necessary medical treatment.' He emphasized the 'right to treatment' for political prisoners, quoting Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize laureate and political prisoner, stating: 'The Iranian judicial system creates opportunities for the death of prisoners.' On June 20 of this year, Naqvi was also transferred to the hospital 'on the seventh day of his hunger strike after his blood pressure and thyroid medications were cut off.' This political prisoner was on hunger strike at that time in protest against the neglect of his demands along with several other Azerbaijani political prisoners. The Azerbaijani Political Prisoners Defense Association (ADAP) announced on June 10 that Tahir Naqvi, Abdulaziz Azimi Qadim (a defrocked cleric), Bagher Hajizadeh Mazraeh, Karam Mardane Mostali Beigloo, Fatemeh Atashi Khiyavi, Morteza Parvin Joda, Ayaz Seyfkhah, Araz Aman, Kamal Noori, Saeed Jamalzadeh, and Hossein Piriy Qoshachai have been in temporary detention since their arrest on February 5 of last year. According to ADAP, these political prisoners were arrested in the cities of Bonab, Rasht, Islamshahr, Astara, and Karaj, and after enduring 15 days in solitary confinement in Evin Prison's Ward 209, they were transferred to Ward 4, with some also moved to the women's ward of the prison. The Iran Human Rights Campaign reported on August 22 that between May 30 and August 15 of this year, at least 34 political prisoners in various Iranian prisons were 'deliberately' deprived of access to adequate medical services. This detailed report, published on Wednesday, August 22, lists the names of these 34 prisoners, along with their place of detention, type of illness, age, and how they were deprived of medical services, including access to medication or transfer to medical facilities outside the prison.
