Taliban Attack on German Consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif

Afghan government officials have stated that Taliban forces detonated a car bomb at the entrance of the German consulate in Mazar-i-Sharif on Thursday evening, resulting in at least two deaths. Reports indicate that over 80 individuals were injured in the attack. According to Reuters, the Taliban has claimed responsibility for the attack, stating it was in retaliation for a NATO airstrike in a village near Kunduz that resulted in the deaths of 30 people. Eyewitnesses reported that the impact of the vehicle on the consulate building and the resulting explosion shattered windows of surrounding buildings. They also noted hearing sporadic gunfire following the blast. A NATO spokesperson stated that the explosion caused "significant damage" to the consulate building. Syed Kamal Sadat, the police chief of Balkh province, confirmed that several people were killed and dozens were injured in the explosion, but none of the consulate staff were harmed. A spokesperson for the German Foreign Ministry stated that the attack was suppressed by Afghan and German security forces, as well as NATO special forces. The spokesperson added that all German consulate staff are safe and in a secure location. However, the number of casualties among security forces and civilians remains unclear. The attack occurred at 11 PM, and a hospital official reported that two people were killed and 87 injured in the incident. According to Reuters, this attack highlights widespread security issues in Afghanistan in recent months, with heavy fighting reported in Helmand and Kunduz provinces.
