Taliban Representatives Meet Again with US Envoy

Despite the Taliban threatening to end negotiations with the US regarding peace and the future of Afghanistan, the US special envoy and Taliban representatives met on Monday in the Qatari capital. Zabihullah Mujahid, the spokesman for the Taliban, stated that negotiations between their delegation and US officials began on Monday in Qatar. A news source from the group also told Radio Free Europe (Radio Azadi in Afghanistan) that the discussions between Zalmay Khalilzad, the US special representative for Afghanistan, and members of the Taliban's political office were focused on the manner and mechanism of the withdrawal of international forces from Afghanistan. US officials have not yet confirmed or denied these statements. Khalilzad's last post on his Twitter account was two days ago, where he announced the end of his trip to Pakistan and expressed satisfaction with the negotiations: "With further steps from Pakistan that will yield tangible results, we are moving in the right direction." On Saturday, Pakistan's foreign minister mentioned in a meeting with the US special envoy that Islamabad is trying to host another round of negotiations between the American delegation and Taliban representatives. However, the Taliban spokesman stated that they do not intend to meet with Khalilzad in Pakistan. Nevertheless, the recent meeting between the Taliban and the US representative in Doha contradicts what the militant group previously stated. At the end of January, the Taliban had denied reports about the resumption of talks with Khalilzad. The negotiations in Qatar come at a time when the Taliban killed over 100 members of Afghanistan's national security forces at a military base in Maidan Wardak province on Monday. Taliban representatives have also recently met with officials from the Islamic Republic. Donald Trump, the President of the United States, recently announced plans to significantly reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan. The war and unrest in Afghanistan is the longest war in which the United States has participated. Tadamichi Yamamoto, the UN representative for Afghanistan, recently stated that the prospects for peace negotiations and ending two decades of war in Afghanistan have never been clearer than today. On the other hand, Sami Yousafzai, a political expert in Afghanistan, says, "The security of Afghanistan now resembles a balloon; if too much pressure is applied, it may burst, resulting in another dangerous deadlock."
