KARACHI: A woman was killed and her husband and two children suffered burn injuries in a gas explosion that followed a fire inside the staff quarters of Central Prison Karachi (CPK) on Sunday morning, officials said.

CPK official Ammad Chandio told Dawn that the explosion took place due to a gas leakage inside the residential quarters of a policeman.

He said Constable Tariq Ali Mardan, 50, his wife and two children suffered burn wounds. They were shifted to the Burns Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where the woman, identified as Summaiya, 45, died during treatment.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed said she suffered 81 per cent burns, her husband suffered 60pc buns while their sons —Mustafa, 13, and Murtaza, 10 — received 13pc and six per cent burns, respectively.

A spokesperson for Rescue-1122 said that the blast had occurred inside the quarters because of gas leakage. The fire itself extinguished by the time firefighters reached the scene, he added.
