Tehran Police: Arrest of Several Suspects Related to Attack on Khomeini's Tomb

The head of Tehran police announced the arrest of five individuals suspected of being connected to the attack on Ayatollah Khomeini's tomb in Tehran. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Intelligence promised to soon release 'photos and details' of the attackers involved in the Tehran assaults. The head of the National Security Commission of the Parliament also stated that 'a woman' has been arrested in this regard. Hossein Sajjadi-Nia, the head of Tehran police, announced on Wednesday night that five 'suspects' connected to the attack on Ayatollah Khomeini's tomb have been arrested and that 'security police are investigating and interrogating' these individuals. In the same context, Aladdin Boroujerdi, head of the National Security and Foreign Policy Commission of the Parliament, also mentioned that 'a woman' has been arrested in connection with the attack and is in the custody of 'intelligence forces.' In this regard, Hamid Bahmaniyari, the police chief of southwest Tehran, stated in an interview with the Fars news agency that this woman was unarmed but 'was present on the sidelines of these events and appeared to be connected to the terrorists.' According to Mr. Bahmaniyari, on Wednesday, two attackers entered the premises of Ayatollah Khomeini's tomb after shooting one of the guards, resulting in a confrontation where one person was killed, and another 'intended to detonate his suicide belt among the police forces but was shot dead by the officers.' Some reports on Wednesday indicated that one of the attackers had detonated himself. On the same day, four other armed individuals attacked the Parliament building in Tehran, leading to a total of 16 deaths and 52 injuries from the simultaneous attacks, with the attackers also being killed. According to Ahmad Shojaei, head of the country's forensic organization, among the 16 deceased, three were women and the rest were men. The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attacks on Wednesday, threatening that more attacks against Iran 'are on the way.' Reza Seyfollahie, deputy secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, stated that the perpetrators of these attacks were 'Iranian.' Meanwhile, the Ministry of Intelligence announced on Thursday afternoon that it would soon release 'photos and details' of the attackers. Mahmoud Alavi, the Minister of Intelligence, also mentioned that 'individuals from the background' of the attackers have been arrested, but 'some aspects of the issue cannot be disclosed at this time.' He stated that the Ministry of Intelligence has discovered and neutralized 'one hundred terrorist operations' in the past two years. Over the past two years, judicial, security, and intelligence officials of the Islamic Republic have repeatedly reported on ISIS's attempts to infiltrate and carry out terrorist operations within Iranian territory without providing specific details. However, on Wednesday, for the first time, the capital of Iran experienced such an attack similar to those in other capitals like London and Paris.
