Tension in Bucharest; Romanian far-right candidate fights against electoral ban

The Romanian Central Election Committee has barred right-wing politician Colin Georgescu from running again in the presidential elections; a decision that led to clashes between his supporters and police in Bucharest on Sunday, March 10. Following the announcement of the Central Election Committee's decision, hundreds of Colin Georgescu's supporters clashed with security forces outside the committee's headquarters in Bucharest. Protesters set benches and trash cans on fire and threw heavy objects at police forces, who responded with tear gas. The Central Election Committee justified its decision to disqualify Mr. Georgescu by referencing a Constitutional Court order that annulled the main elections in November: The Romanian Constitutional Court annulled the presidential elections. In a statement, the committee noted that "as the election process resumes, committee members have concluded that confirming the same individual as a qualified candidate for the presidency of Romania is unacceptable." The committee had 48 hours to accept or reject candidacy requests. One of Colin Georgescu's advisors confirmed that he would appeal to the Constitutional Court within the 24-hour legal deadline. The court is expected to announce its final decision by Wednesday. In the elections four months ago, Colin Georgescu advanced to the second round as the leading candidate. He, who has been critical of NATO and opposed Romania's support for Ukraine in the war with Russia, registered for re-election on March 8. Colin Georgescu reacted angrily to the election committee's decision, calling it "a direct blow to the heart of democracy" and warned in a post on X: "If democracy falls in Romania, the entire democratic world will collapse." This right-wing candidate further claimed: "This is just the beginning... Europe has become a dictatorship, and Romania is caught in tyranny." The first round of the Romanian presidential elections on December 7 was annulled by the Constitutional Court following reports from Romania's security agency indicating foreign interference, including on social media, in favor of Colin Georgescu. The annulment of this election has deepened political divisions in Romania and raised concerns about the democratic process in this EU and NATO member even abroad. Last month, U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance criticized this development in Romania at the Munich Security Conference, stating: "If your democracy is vulnerable to the cost of just a few hundred thousand dollars from a foreign country and on social media, that democracy probably wasn't very strong to begin with." Colin Georgescu was not a well-known figure before his unexpected victory in the December elections; however, he topped the first round with about 22% of the votes. This pro-Russian right-wing politician was supposed to face EU supporter Elena Lascu in the second round; an election seen as a referendum on Romania's future. Georgescu had launched a campaign on TikTok ahead of the elections, calling for an end to aid to Ukraine, a topic that apparently attracted many voters. He is also critical of Romania's NATO membership. Colin Georgescu's anti-Western views are frequently reflected in Russian state media and Kremlin-affiliated social media. Some of his other views include increasing support for Romanian farmers, reducing dependence on imports, and boosting energy and food production.
