Tensions in Relations Between Rome and Paris; Italian Foreign Minister Cancels Trip to France

Antonio Tajani, the Italian Foreign Minister, canceled his trip to Paris in response to remarks made by Gerald Darmanin, the French Minister of the Interior, regarding Giorgia Meloni, the Prime Minister of Italy. Tajani stated on 'Rai 1' television, 'I cannot participate in a bilateral meeting with a government and a minister who has insulted us without reason.' He deemed Darmanin's comments as 'unacceptable' and contrary to European commonalities. Darmanin had stated in an interview with French radio 'RMC' that Giorgia Meloni had failed to address the 'immigration issues' she promised to tackle when coming to power. The French Interior Minister also implicitly compared Meloni to Marine Le Pen, the leader of the far-right movement in France, suggesting that Meloni, like other far-right politicians, had 'lied' to the public about immigration issues. These remarks were made while Tajani was preparing to travel to Paris to mend the fragile relations between the two countries in recent months; however, immediately after Darmanin's comments, Tajani canceled his trip. France quickly issued a statement to prevent escalating tensions with Rome, assuring the Italian government of its commitment to cooperation with its neighbor. However, even this reassurance could not sway the Italian diplomat and member of the right-wing Forza Italia party from his decision.
