Tensions in the Middle East; Lufthansa Suspends Night Flights to and from Beirut

A spokesperson for Lufthansa announced on Monday the suspension of the airline's night flights to and from Beirut until August 1 of this year due to the situation in the Middle East. According to Reuters, the spokesperson confirmed that this change began on Saturday, June 30, but there has been no change to the airline's daily flights to and from Beirut for now. At the same time, Swiss International Air Lines, a subsidiary of Lufthansa, announced that it would reschedule its night flights to and from Beirut 'due to political developments at the Lebanon-Israel border' until August 1. The decision by these two airlines comes amid ongoing tensions between Hezbollah and Israel and following requests from several countries, including the United States, Germany, Canada, the Netherlands, Australia, Switzerland, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Sweden, urging their citizens to avoid travel to Lebanon or to leave the country as soon as possible. Additionally, many Western and regional airlines canceled their flights to and from certain countries in the region and rerouted their transit flights in the days before and after the unprecedented attack by the Islamic Republic of Iran on Israel in late April of this year. Shortly after the terrorist attack by Hamas on Israel on October 7, Hezbollah, as the main proxy arm of the Islamic Republic, began sporadic missile and drone attacks on northern Israel, resulting in nearly 60,000 Israeli citizens being evacuated from areas adjacent to Lebanon. In response, Israel has carried out deadly attacks on Hezbollah positions in Lebanon and Syria, killing many members of the group, including senior commanders. So far, U.S. diplomatic efforts to push Hezbollah back to the Litani River, 30 kilometers from the Israel-Lebanon border, based on UN Security Council Resolution 1701, which ended the 34-day war between Israel and Hezbollah in the summer of 2006, have failed. The U.S. and Europe have warned Hezbollah to stop its attacks on Israel. Tensions have escalated at the Israel-Lebanon border, with Hezbollah launching 40 rockets. Concerns about 'escalating tensions in the region' have increased, with Netanyahu accusing the Islamic Republic of attempting to 'dominate the Middle East.' The U.S. Embassy in Beirut advised American citizens to reconsider travel to Lebanon due to a complex security environment. Germany and the Netherlands have warned their citizens to 'leave Lebanon immediately,' raising the likelihood of war between Israel and Hezbollah. The Israeli Defense Minister warned Hezbollah that they could return Lebanon to the 'Stone Age.' A Biden envoy warned Hassan Nasrallah that if Hezbollah's attacks continue, the U.S. would not be able to stop Israel. United Airlines extended the cancellation of its direct flights to Tel Aviv. Lufthansa extended the cancellation of its flights to Tehran until May 9. Several airlines have canceled and rerouted flights to the Middle East.
