The 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature Awarded to Norwegian Playwright Jon Fosse

The 2023 Nobel Prize in Literature has been awarded to Jon Fosse, a 64-year-old Norwegian author. His plays, novels, and children's books have earned him this prestigious literary award for 'giving voice to the unspeakable.' Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel Literature Committee, stated that Jon Fosse's works are rooted in his Norwegian language, nature, and background. Fosse expressed surprise when Mats Malm, the permanent secretary of the Nobel Academy, contacted him to inform him of the award, although he had 'cautiously' prepared himself for such news over the past ten years. He has written around 40 plays, as well as novels, short stories, children's books, poetry, and essays. Jon Fosse is often compared to Henrik Ibsen, the famous Norwegian poet and playwright. The Swedish Academy, which grants this award, stated that the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to this Norwegian author for 'Fosse's innovative plays and prose that give voice to the unspeakable.' Some of his works that have been translated into Persian include 'The Pianist of the Era,' 'A Girl with a Yellow Raincoat,' 'The Girl on the Couch and Winter,' 'He Sings His Songs at Night,' 'Alice by the Fire,' 'Beautiful and the Dream of Autumn,' 'The Child,' and 'A Summer Day.' Jon Fosse is the fourth Norwegian writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. He was also shortlisted for the International Booker Prize in 2022 with his work 'A New Name: Septology 5-4.' Fosse published his first novel, 'Red, Black,' in 1983. In the 1980s, he published several other novels and poetry collections, but he began writing plays in the early 1990s and returned to storytelling after writing around 30 plays. As he states, 'Septology' is the longest text he has ever written and is somewhat a summary of everything he has written before, rewritten from a new perspective. The Nobel Prize in Literature is selected by 18 judges from the Swedish Academy and honors the entire body of work of an author. Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor, emphasized in his will that the Nobel Prize in Literature should be awarded to someone who has created the most distinguished works in the field of literature and in an ideal way. The Nobel Prizes are worth 11 million Swedish kronor (equivalent to one million dollars). Winners also receive an 18-carat gold medal and a diploma of honor at the award ceremony in December.
