The 2024 Paralympic Games Have Begun

The 2024 Paralympic Games in Paris commenced in a ceremony filled with color and hope, as athletes from around the world compete for 11 days. Emmanuel Macron, the President of France, announced the start of the games on Wednesday evening, September 7, during a ceremony at Place de la Concorde, marking the first time the opening ceremony of the Paralympics was held outside the main stadium. 4,400 athletes from 168 countries entered the square at sunset, amidst cheers from 30,000 spectators, including 65 athletes from the Iranian delegation participating in 10 sports. The pleasant weather on Wednesday evening contrasted with the heavy rain and poor conditions during the Olympic opening ceremony on July 27. One interesting part of the ceremony was the performance by "Lucky Love," a French singer who lost his left arm at the elbow. He performed the famous song "My Ability" with dancers, some of whom had disabilities. Andrew Parsons, the President of the International Paralympic Committee, expressed hope for a "revolution" in the acceptance and inclusion of people with disabilities in the world before Emmanuel Macron officially declared the games open. During the ceremony, the Paralympic flag was brought to Place de la Concorde by John McFall, a British Paralympic runner, who has been recognized by the European Space Agency as the first astronaut with a disability. French Olympic champion Florent Manaudou also brought the Olympic torch to the square. In total, 18 out of 35 Olympic venues will be used for the Paralympic Games, including Stade de France. Ticket sales for these competitions have increased since the Olympic Games, with over two million of the two and a half million available tickets sold.
