The American flag had been painted on the ground at the entrance of the building, and visitors were required to walk over it to enter. The website Ensaf News, close to the government of Masoud Pezeshkian, reported on January 18 that this action 'was taken before the new government came to power and seems to oppose the policies of President Pezeshkian and his moderate government, which is why it was removed a few weeks ago.' For years in Iran, burning and trampling on the flags of the United States and Israel have been publicly performed during government rallies, and these actions are seen as symbols of the Iranian government's open struggle against the policies of these two countries. Pezeshkian stated that Iran is 'principally' ready to negotiate with Trump's second government. The removal of the American flag from the yard of the Iranian government comes after Masoud Pezeshkian, on January 15, less than a week before the inauguration of the elected President of the United States, told NBC that the Islamic Republic is 'principally' ready to negotiate with Trump's second government. The Iranian President also rejected Trump's previous statements about Tehran's attempts to kill him and the accusation against an Iranian man regarding the Quds Force's involvement in this matter by the U.S. Department of Justice. Ensaf News, which is aligned with the government faction, praised the removal of the American flag from the entrance of the government building, stating, 'Although deep differences between Iran and the U.S. remain, the removal of symbolic and provocative behaviors can create a more suitable environment for dialogue and interaction.' Meanwhile, Ali Khamenei, the leader of the Islamic Republic, in his latest speech, warned officials against what he called 'considering the demands of the U.S. and Israel,' and Hossein Shariatmadari, his representative at Kayhan Institute, called for Pezeshkian to 'take revenge' on Trump instead of negotiating with him. Mehdi Fazeli, a member of the office for 'Preserving and Publishing the Works of Ali Khamenei,' also claimed in a press release that negotiating with the U.S. would 'play a very important role in restoring U.S. hegemony and is a betrayal to the entire world.' Political analysts say that it seems sanctions and economic and political pressures, as well as the situation of regional allies and the Islamic Republic's proxy forces, have led Tehran, despite its propaganda slogans, to seek ways to reduce tensions with the incoming U.S. government. Following Donald Trump's victory in the U.S. presidential election, which included maximum pressure on the Islamic Republic, withdrawal from the nuclear agreement (JCPOA), and his unprecedented order to kill Qassem Soleimani, the commander of the Quds Force, expectations for renewed pressure on the Iranian government increased. These expectations were further strengthened by reports of a proposed '100-day plan' aimed at limiting the Islamic Republic of Iran through diplomatic, intelligence, military, and economic measures to the elected President of the United States. The resumption of stalled negotiations between Iran and Europe regarding Tehran's nuclear program, along with the release of some dual-national prisoners in Iran, has also been assessed in this context. The removal of the American flag from the entrance of the government building occurred while, especially after the 'Women, Life, Freedom' protests following the death of Mahsa Amini in the custody of the morality police in 2022, numerous images and videos were published showing some people and students refusing to walk over the American flag painted on the ground at Friday prayer locations and some universities. On Friday, January 18, the Student News Agency, affiliated with the student Basij, reported the collection of American and Israeli flags from the entrance of the university and colleges of Noshirvani University in Babol and condemned it. According to this news agency, these flags, which were installed by the 'student Basij at the entrance of the university and colleges,' were collected by 'a number of members of the Islamic Culture and Civilization Association unilaterally.'
