The 'Critical' Condition of Eisa Ebrahimzadeh, Imprisoned Farmer, After Suicide Attempt

News sources reported that a protesting farmer, who was arrested and sentenced during the nationwide protests of 2022, attempted suicide due to 'the prison's failure to extend his leave.' The Kurdpa news agency, citing an informed source, reported that Eisa Ebrahimzadeh, a farmer from the village of 'Deh Shams' in Oshnaviyeh, West Azerbaijan Province, had requested an extension of his leave from prison 'considering the harvest season,' and when officials 'did not pay attention' to his request, he 'attempted suicide by ingesting poison.' According to this informed source, Eisa Ebrahimzadeh 'has been transferred to the hospital and is currently hospitalized.' Additionally, the 'Hengaw' website reported that 'his condition is currently critical.' Eisa Ebrahimzadeh, a farmer and labor activist, was arrested on November 21, 2022, by intelligence agencies during the nationwide protests and was interrogated for 'two months' in intelligence detention centers in Oshnaviyeh and Urmia. He was temporarily released from Oshnaviyeh prison on January 11, 2023, on a bail of 500 million tomans. Subsequently, the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Oshnaviyeh sentenced this protesting farmer to 'five years in prison' on charges of 'participating in protests, propaganda against the regime, and connections with one of the Kurdish parties,' three years of which are enforceable. This activist was arrested again on March 6, 2023, and transferred to Naqdeh prison to serve his sentence. Reports of pressure on political and civil prisoners and violations of their rights by the authorities and judicial agents of the Islamic Republic have been reported multiple times before. For instance, on the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Shakila Monfared, a political prisoner, was violently arrested on July 6 during the fourth day of her five-day medical leave while she was visiting the prosecutor's office to extend her leave for further treatment. A few days later, in a letter obtained by VOA, Shakila Monfared confirmed that the 'head of the prosecutor's protection' physically assaulted her during her arrest, and 'the beating was so severe' that her hands 'were completely bloodied.'
