The Death Sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi Annulled by the Supreme Court

Amir Reysian and Mohammad Reza Nazari Nejad, lawyers, announced that the Supreme Court has 'annulled' the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi, a imprisoned labor activist. Amir Reysian stated in an interview with 'Shahrak Sharq' that after reviewing the case, the Supreme Court 'annulled the sentence of my client, Ms. Sharifeh Mohammadi, and referred the case for re-examination to an equivalent branch.' One day before the second round of the fourteenth presidential elections in Iran, Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist, was sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court of Rasht; a ruling that sparked widespread reactions from civil and political activists. Sharifeh Mohammadi, 45, from Miyaneh in East Azerbaijan and residing in Rasht, was arrested by the Rasht Information Department on December 5, 2023, on charges of 'propaganda against the regime.' According to the ruling of the Revolutionary Court in Rasht, Ms. Mohammadi was sentenced to death for 'baghi' or 'armed rebellion.' Her membership in the 'Coordination Committee to Help Establish Labor Organizations' was cited as evidence for the charges against her, and the Revolutionary Court also attributed the charge of 'membership in the Komala Party' to this labor activist. Radio Farda sources state that despite her 'social concerns,' Sharifeh Mohammadi has had no political activities, and the issuance of the death sentence against this labor activist on the charge of 'baghi' by the judiciary was aimed at 'intimidating the labor movement' in Iran. On October 11, 2023, Nasrin Sotoudeh and Farhad Mithaemi, human rights defenders, announced that if the death sentence of Sharifeh Mohammadi is not revoked, they will go on a hunger strike. The campaign to defend Sharifeh Mohammadi, a labor activist sentenced to death, announced on Tuesday, October 10, 2023, that the increasing calls for the annulment of the death sentence is a resounding 'no' to state-sponsored murder. In July of this year, a group of female prisoners held in Evin Prison condemned the death sentence for Sharifeh Mohammadi and warned that this could be a prelude to issuing 'heavier sentences' for other opponents of the Islamic Republic.
