The Death Toll from the Forest Fire in Greece Reaches 50

Local officials from the Red Cross report that following the discovery of 26 more bodies, the death toll from the forest fire near Athens, the capital of Greece, has reached at least 50. Red Cross officials in Athens have stated to local networks that these bodies were found in the port city of Daphni, and the deputy mayor of the area has confirmed this figure. Previously, it was reported that the widespread fire in the north and east of Athens had left 24 victims. Since yesterday, two large forests around Athens, which are considered recreational areas close to the capital, have been engulfed in flames. The fire has also left at least 150 injured, many of whom are reported to be in critical condition. According to a report from the German news agency, the town of Mati, near the port of Rafina, has been almost completely destroyed. Local media have also reported that fishermen and rescuers managed to save 700 people who had taken refuge among the rocks to escape the fire. Thousands of residents in these areas spent last night outdoors or inside their vehicles. Reports indicate that following a decrease in wind speed, the fire has been contained in most areas, and planes and helicopters have successfully landed to assist the people. A spokesperson for the Greek fire department expressed hope that the fire would be completely extinguished today (Tuesday, August 2). Alexis Tsipras, the Prime Minister of Greece, who was on a trip to Bosnia, cut his trip short and returned to Athens for close monitoring of the crisis management process. He has called for more assistance from neighboring provinces and cooperation from the military to control the fire and aid the people.
