The Death Toll from the Nepal Earthquake Exceeds 6,000

A week after the devastating earthquake in Nepal, officials have identified or found the bodies of over 6,200 people. Reports of miraculous rescues of some citizens after several days under the rubble have emerged, while rescuers are still struggling to reach remote areas. According to a recent report from the Nepal Emergency Operations Center released on Friday, the death toll stands at 6,204, with nearly 14,000 injured. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake has destroyed significant parts of the capital, Kathmandu, and caused serious damage to mountainous and remote areas, making access for rescuers extremely difficult. Facebook users have managed to raise $10 million to aid the victims. On Thursday, some remote rural and urban areas received shipments of international and domestic aid for the first time. Reuters reports that the extent of the damage and the number of casualties in these areas remains unknown to rescuers and aid workers. A witness told the agency that a helicopter surveying areas around Kathmandu up to the border with Tibet in China reported 'very serious damage' to 70 to 80 percent of buildings. Since Saturday, many citizens have continued to spend the night in the streets and open spaces. Significant parts of Kathmandu's 'Durbar Square' (the main square of the city), which is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, have been turned into ruins. The United Nations estimates that 600,000 houses have been destroyed or damaged. According to the organization, eight million people have been affected by the earthquake, of which at least two million will need medicine, tents, water, and food in the next three months. On Thursday, in an event described as a 'miracle' on social media, a 23-year-old woman and a young boy were pulled alive from the rubble after six days. Despite this, there is little optimism about others who remain trapped under the debris.
