On Wednesday, February 7, the Iranian national football team lost 3-2 to Qatar in the semi-finals of the 2023 Asian Cup at the Al Thumama Stadium, officiated by Ahmad Ali from Kuwait. The Iranian team believed Mendes committed a handball, but after a VAR review, their appeal was rejected. David Beckham, the former star of the England national team and owner of Inter Miami, was a special guest at the match. At the start of the second half, Milad Mohammadi and Mohammad Mohibi replaced Ehsan Hajsafi and Omid Ebrahimi. Subsequently, a handball by Ahmad Fathi in Qatar's penalty area led to a VAR review and a penalty awarded to Iran. In the 51st minute, Alireza Jahanbakhsh scored from the penalty spot, leveling the match again. Reza Asadi was the last substitution for Iran, replacing Mehdi Taremi. The Iranian team, which had high hopes of reaching the final after defeating Japan in the quarter-finals, faced disappointment again with a 3-2 loss to Qatar. After two decades, Iran reached the semi-finals of the Asian Cup, but the team's performance sparked mixed reactions on social media and among the public. During the widespread protests in 2022 and coinciding with Iran's participation in the World Cup in Qatar, a noticeable distance emerged between football fans and the national team, to the extent that some people celebrated after Iran's loss to the USA. Iranian football fans and social media users expressed disappointment over the national team's indifference to events in Iran, expecting them to be the voice of the people during the World Cup. Despite the players' attempts to show solidarity with the people before the match against England, some people on social media labeled the national team as the 'Islamic Republic Team.' Perhaps if the Iranian national team had won the championship in the 18th edition of the Asian Cup, they could have once again won the hearts of their supporters.
