Hosseyn Khosrow Ali Vaziri, known as 'Iron Sheikh', the former Iranian wrestling champion, has passed away at the age of 81. His social media accounts announced his death on Wednesday with a message stating: 'Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling.' The statement continued: 'We announce with great sorrow the passing of Iron Sheikh, but we find solace in knowing that he left this world peacefully and his legacy will remain for future generations.' Iron Sheikh, whose real name was Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, was born in 1942 in Tehran and began his sports career in wrestling, during a time when champions like Gholamreza Takhti, Abdollah Mohammadi, and Imam Ali Habibi were prominent. This Iranian wrestler immigrated to the United States in the early 1970s and worked as a technical advisor with the country's wrestling federation for a time. After the establishment of the 'World Wrestling Federation' (WWF), which organizes wrestling competitions, he joined this organization and quickly became one of its controversial figures. His presence in these competitions coincided with the hostage crisis of American diplomats in Tehran. The crisis and the negative atmosphere against Iran at that time made Sheikh one of the most disliked figures in these competitions. However, for many Iranian expatriates, Iron Sheikh was a symbol of resistance and national identity, ridiculed by some Americans during those turbulent days. Sheikh's appearance with a thick mustache and a keffiyeh on his head, along with the three-colored flag of Iran in the wrestling ring, received significant media attention in the U.S. and led to an increase in television viewership. According to some experts, Iron Sheikh played an important role in the globalization of professional wrestling in the 1980s. After retiring from wrestling, Iron Sheikh moved to Georgia with his family. Recently, a documentary about his life was made by two Canadian-Iranian brothers named Jian and Pej Mogan, depicting the ups and downs of this champion's life - from triumph and glory at the peak of success to failure and descent into addiction. In this documentary, he candidly discusses personal issues, family life, the tragic death of his daughter, depression, and drug addiction; a dark chapter in the life of a man who was once one of the most famous wrestling champions in the world. With the help of Jian and Pej Mogan, and during the filming and production of this documentary, he gradually overcame his personal life challenges and entered a new chapter of his life.
