The European Union Allocates Five Billion Euros in Military Aid to Ukraine

On Wednesday afternoon, the 27 member countries of the European Union reached an agreement in Brussels regarding military aid to Ukraine in the face of the Russian invasion. Dmytro Kuleba, Ukraine's foreign minister, stated after this decision: 'This is a powerful and timely demonstration of Europe's unity and determination to achieve our common victory, and we eagerly await the final decision at the next meeting of the EU Foreign Relations Council.' This is the first such action after months of blockage of additional aid funding for Kyiv by some Republican members of the U.S. Congress. Given the battlefield situation and the resistance of some Republicans, the White House has been seeking ways to send more military aid to Ukraine. U.S. officials are also considering options to seize 285 billion dollars of Russian assets frozen in 2022 and use this money to pay for Ukraine's weapons. William Burns, the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), emphasized during the annual hearing of the House Intelligence Committee on global threats to national security that failing to approve aid to Ukraine would have consequences that, according to him, 'directly relate to U.S. interests in the Indo-Pacific region.' Burns stated: 'The result will be that China's ambitions will be strengthened and the trust that our partners and allies in the Indo-Pacific region have in us will be weakened.' Mike Johnson, the Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, who is an ally of former President Donald Trump, has so far refrained from voting on a bill that provides an additional 60 billion dollars for Ukraine. This bill has been approved in the Senate, which is controlled by Democrats, and both Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives say it will pass if Republican leaders allow a vote. Mike Turner, a Republican representative and chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, stated that some members of Congress support aid to Ukraine but mistakenly believe that Kyiv can withstand delays in receiving further assistance.
