The European Union Expresses Readiness to Engage with the Government of Masoud Beikzadeh in Iran

The European Union has expressed its readiness to engage with the government of Masoud Beikzadeh, the newly elected president in Iran, a statement made concurrently with the cautious approach of Western governments towards the results of the Iranian presidential election. Nabila Masrali, the spokesperson for the EU's foreign policy, congratulated Beikzadeh on his victory in a post on social media platform X on Saturday evening, while announcing attention to the results of the presidential election in Iran. Beikzadeh won the election with a promise of engagement with the world and negotiations with Western powers aimed at resolving Iran's nuclear dispute and lifting sanctions, defeating the hardline candidate Saeed Jalili. Following the U.S. withdrawal from the nuclear agreement known as the JCPOA, Iran has been under heavy sanctions from Washington and has expanded its nuclear program, including increasing uranium enrichment levels and its stockpile. The International Atomic Energy Agency has acknowledged that the JCPOA now 'exists only on paper' and 'no one is adhering to it.' In her message, Masrali wrote, 'In line with the EU's key interactive policy, we are ready to engage with the new Iranian government.' Western countries have generally reacted cautiously to the results of the election held on Friday. Beikzadeh is the first reformist politician to take the presidency in Iran since Mohammad Khatami in 2005. Khatami's presidency was marked by improved relations between Iran and Western governments, but since the overall direction of Iran's foreign policy is determined by the Supreme Leader, it is unclear how much Beikzadeh can succeed in breaking the current nuclear deadlock and reducing tensions with the West. On Saturday, the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) reported Italy's congratulatory message to Beikzadeh. According to Italian media, the Deputy Foreign Minister of Italy congratulated Beikzadeh on his election victory and expressed hope that diplomatic relations would strengthen during his presidency. Edmond Chirielli stated, 'I extend my warmest congratulations to the people and government of Iran on the election of the new president of the Islamic Republic of Iran. I hope we can cooperate to establish peace and stability in the region, especially in the Gulf of Aden and the Middle East as a whole.' He added, 'I hope that during the new presidency, diplomatic relations will be strengthened; with the hope that the traditional and long-standing friendship between our two great nations will help the governments of Italy and Iran to better cooperate in addressing the global challenges that lie ahead in the coming years.' The United States had previously stated that Washington does not expect this election to lead to fundamental changes in Iran. The U.S. State Department, in a statement sent to Radio Farda, referred to the boycott of the election by a significant portion of Iranian voters, stating, 'The elections in Iran were not free and fair. As a result, a significant number of Iranians preferred not to participate at all.' The statement added, 'We do not expect this election to lead to fundamental changes in Iran's trajectory or greater respect for the human rights of citizens. As the candidates themselves have stated, Iran's policy is determined by the leader.' According to the Iranian Ministry of Interior, in the second round of the Iranian presidential election, Beikzadeh secured 16,384,157 votes in competition with Saeed Jalili, winning the presidency for a four-year term.
