The Girl Who 'Bleeds' from Her Eyes

Marnie-Rae Harvey is a seventeen-year-old British girl who bleeds from her eyes instead of crying. According to the BBC, Marnie-Rae first experienced the phenomenon of coughing up blood in 2013, where blood would come from her mouth when she coughed. However, since last summer, bleeding from her eyes has also started, and now blood is coming from her nose and ears as well. She says, 'My eyes burn, and when the blood covers my pupil, I can't see anything anymore.' When the bleeding from this teenage girl's eyes first began, her parents rushed her to the hospital. The shocked paramedics said they had never seen anything like it. However, when they arrived at the hospital, nothing unusual was found in her eyes: 'When I got to the hospital, they examined my eyes, but everything was normal.' Marnie-Rae explains her condition: 'Blood comes from my eyes and covers my whole face, and within a second, everything goes back to normal. I had a blood test, and everything was normal.' After the first bleeding, blood came from Marnie-Rae's eyes every day for two weeks until, as she describes, 'one day I was in a store when suddenly bleeding started from both my eyes and both my ears, and I had to go back to the hospital by ambulance.' She has seen many specialists for her condition, but no one has yet diagnosed the main problem. She has been told that her immune system is weak. It seems that the situation is only getting worse: 'Wherever I go, people stare at me. The last time in the hospital, people were taking pictures of my face. I can't go out of the house, and the situation is apparently only getting worse.' Hamolocrya is the scientific name for the condition where blood comes from the eyes instead of tears. This disease is very rare and occurs due to wounds or tissue ruptures, but Marnie-Rae has not experienced any of these issues.
