The House of Commons of Canada Approves Designation of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a Terrorist Organization

Members of the House of Commons of Canada unanimously supported the addition of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) to the country's official list of foreign terrorist organizations on Wednesday afternoon. According to Canadian media, the bill, presented by the House of Commons Justice Committee, was passed with 327 votes in favor and no votes against. The resolution calls on the Canadian government to recognize the IRGC as a foreign terrorist organization in its entirety. Canadian lawmakers had also approved a bill to designate the IRGC as a terrorist entity in 2018, but Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's government did not implement it. This decision came after the downing of Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752 by IRGC missiles near Tehran, which resulted in the deaths of 176 people. The designation of the IRGC as a terrorist organization is one of the main demands of Iranian opposition groups from Western countries, which has recently been emphasized more. Following the widespread protests in Iran in 2022, Iranian opponents of the Islamic Republic abroad have consistently raised this demand in their protests. The bill to add the IRGC to Canada's terrorism list was passed two days after a meeting between several Iranian opposition activists and some members of the Canadian Parliament.
