The International Community Rushes to Aid Earthquake Victims in Bam

As darkness envelops Iran, thousands of homeless earthquake victims in Bam prepare to spend their second night outdoors in sub-zero temperatures. Rescue teams have set up tents, but many residents have no shelter. The Iranian Ministry of Interior estimates that 20,000 people died and 30,000 were injured in the earthquake that struck early Friday. However, some officials have stated that the death toll may be significantly higher. Severe cold, lack of electricity, water, and disrupted communication lines have hampered rescue efforts. Provincial officials report that over three thousand victims' bodies have been buried so far. The international community has rushed to assist the people of Iran by sending rescue teams, medical personnel, and necessary supplies for the earthquake victims. On Saturday, the arrival of rescue teams in the area began, accompanied by trained search dogs to find victims among the rubble. The United States and several European and Asian countries are sending teams to help search for victims. Some of these countries are also dispatching medical teams to treat the injured. Many Muslim countries have also joined humanitarian efforts. Pakistan has sent two planes carrying relief goods and equipment, while Saudi Arabia has dispatched three planes with essential supplies to Iran. Turkey has also sent several trucks and planes carrying rescuers, food, and medicine. Hamid Karzai, the head of Afghanistan's transitional government, which suffered from deadly earthquakes in 2001 and 2002, has stated that Afghans will help in any way they can. Meanwhile, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has requested over $12 million to expedite the delivery of immediate relief assistance to Iran.
