The Last Suspect of the Barcelona Terrorist Attacks Killed by Police

Four days after the deadly terrorist attack in Barcelona, Spain, which left dozens dead and injured, the police in the Catalonia region of Spain confirmed reports on Monday regarding the death of the main suspect in the attack. Spanish media reported that the individual killed in an area near Barcelona was Younes Abouyaaqoub, the main suspect in the Barcelona attack. The Spanish police also announced that they had obtained evidence indicating that Younes Abouyaaqoub was indeed the driver of the vehicle that mowed down pedestrians on Las Ramblas Boulevard in Barcelona last Thursday, killing 13 people and injuring 120 others. The death toll later rose to 15. According to reports, as it appeared that this individual was wearing an explosive belt during the chase, the police used bomb disposal robots to approach his body after shooting him. The Associated Press quoted a Spanish police officer stating that Younes Abouyaaqoub shouted 'Allahu Akbar' when he was targeted. Approximately eight hours after the Barcelona attack, a similar attack occurred in the coastal city of Cambrils, resulting in one death. Police shot dead five attackers, some of whom were wearing fake explosive vests. The ISIS group claimed responsibility for these attacks. On Sunday, August 20, the head of the Catalonia police announced that of the 12 suspects in last week's attacks, only one was still at large. Earlier reports indicated that the suspect had fled Spain to France, prompting Spanish police to extend their search for the main suspect throughout Europe. On Monday night, the Associated Press quoted Joseph Luis Trapero, the head of the Catalonia police, stating that with the death of Younes Abouyaaqoub, all 12 suspects involved in the Barcelona terrorist cell had been identified, with eight killed and four arrested alive. Younes Abouyaaqoub was of Moroccan descent and had permanent residency in Spain. Meanwhile, it was announced on Monday night in Barcelona that the imam of a mosque suspected of involvement in the Thursday terrorist attacks was one of the two individuals killed during the explosion of a residential building in Alcanar.
