The Last Tango in Paris

Bertolucci, by creating these two characters who engage in intimacy without even knowing each other's names, aims to present a strong hypothesis that one can delve into the depths of the souls of these two individuals through a focus on purely sexual intimacy devoid of love. Paul seeks to alleviate the excruciating pain of losing his wife through pure sexual acts without the complexities of love. Jeanne, reacting with a mix of pity and emotional numbness to the authenticity of this feeling, submits to this painful act because, after all, yielding to Paul's sexual desires is better than the empty and meaningless chatter of her fiancé. For this reason, this relationship cannot exist outside the four walls of this apartment, and from the moment they tell each other their names, their relationship begins to decline.
