The Latest Republican Candidate Also Withdraws from the Race for Speaker of the House

The Associated Press reported that Republican Tom Emmer unexpectedly withdrew from the race for the position of Speaker of the House on Tuesday, just hours after securing his nomination in an internal party meeting. According to the report, Emmer stepped down after it became clear that he did not have enough support from his Republican colleagues for the position. He is the third Republican to be nominated for the Speaker of the U.S. House since Kevin McCarthy's ousting, but the House remains without a leader. Another candidate, Jim Jordan, failed to secure the necessary votes after three rounds of voting on Friday, October 20, and was eliminated from the race. Before Jordan, Steve Scalise was the main Republican candidate for the Speakership, but he withdrew last Thursday without the vote reaching the floor. Former Speaker Kevin McCarthy was ousted due to his collaboration with Democrats in passing a temporary government budget to prevent a government shutdown, receiving the votes of 216 House members, including a few conservative Republicans and Democrats. Following McCarthy's removal, Patrick McHenry, a representative from North Carolina, temporarily took over the Speakership. Republicans currently hold a fragile majority in the House, with a 9-seat advantage over Democrats. A candidate for the Speakership must achieve full consensus or secure at least 218 votes from the 435 members of the House. After three defeats, Jim Jordan was eliminated from the Speakership race.
