The 'Mahsa Amini Human Rights and Security Accountability Act' Reaches the Senate; Islamic Republic on the Brink of More Sanctions

Republican Senator Marco Rubio and Democratic Senator Alex Padilla have introduced a bipartisan bill titled 'Mahsa Amini Human Rights Accountability Act' in the U.S. Senate to impose further economic sanctions on the Islamic Republic. This law mandates the Biden administration to conduct necessary assessments for imposing economic sanctions against Iranian leaders due to human rights violations in Iran. Senator Rubio explained, 'The systematic violation of human rights by the leadership of the Islamic Republic against the Iranian people is brutal. The Iranian regime, as a state sponsor of terrorism, has actively caused devastation against its own people and others. The United States must evaluate and reinforce economic pressure against senior officials of the Iranian regime who are actively involved in suppressing protesters and Iranian civilians.' Senator Padilla added, 'After the brutal murder of Mahsa Amini, Iranian protesters showed extraordinary courage in expressing their anger towards the Iranian regime. We must hold Iranian leaders accountable for the violent suppression of these protests and the severe censorship against their own people. I have supported several resolutions condemning the Iranian regime for Ms. Amini's death and will continue to defend the rights of the Iranian people to bravely protest for their fundamental freedoms.' Earlier, in May of this year, a vote on the 'Mahsa Act,' introduced by several American lawmakers following the suppression of nationwide protests after Mahsa Amini's death, was held in the House Foreign Affairs Committee and was overwhelmingly approved. Following the approval of the 'Mahsa Act' in the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Michael McCaul, the committee's chairman, stated, 'The Iranian regime is accused of brutally violating human rights against the people of this country, and Congress is committed to holding this regime accountable for these crimes.' According to the 'Mahsa Act,' the U.S. President must determine within 90 days of its enactment and then annually whether individuals or entities meet the criteria for sanctions, and if they do not, provide necessary explanations.
