The New British Government Sets Aside Opposition to the ICC's Request for an Arrest Warrant for Netanyahu

The British government has decided to set aside its opposition to the International Criminal Court's request for an arrest warrant against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on charges of war crimes in Gaza. A spokesperson for the new Labour government, which replaced the Conservative government led by former Prime Minister Rishi Sunak earlier this month, stated: "This proposal was put forward by the previous government and was not presented before the elections, and I can confirm that our government will not pursue this proposal. It is a matter for the court to decide." Karim Khan, the prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, announced in May that he was seeking an arrest warrant for Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and three Hamas leaders, including Yahya Sinwar, on charges of war crimes and crimes against humanity. The International Criminal Court has no means to enforce its rulings, but members of the International Court of Justice are obliged to fully cooperate with its decisions. If arrest warrants are issued, Netanyahu and others will be at risk of arrest in 124 countries that are members of the International Court of Justice, including Germany and Britain. The British Labour Party and its leader, Keir Starmer, have faced pressure from their supporters to adopt a tougher stance on the Gaza war. U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris emphasized on Thursday after meeting with Netanyahu in Washington that "there should be no silence regarding the humanitarian suffering in Gaza." The White House is also under increasing pressure to alleviate the suffering of Palestinian civilians under bombardment, including the use of American munitions. Israel and the United States are not members of the International Criminal Court, but the court claims jurisdiction over Gaza, East Jerusalem, and the West Bank, as Palestinian leaders committed to the founding principles of this court in 2015. Following the terrorist attack by Hamas on southern Israel on October 7, which killed 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took over 250 others hostage, Israel launched its offensive in Gaza aimed at destroying Hamas and recovering the hostages. The Biden administration has repeatedly emphasized its ironclad commitment to supporting Israel against threats from the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups, as well as the necessity of the immediate return of Israeli hostages, while also stressing the need to protect the lives of Palestinian civilians. Trump, in a meeting with Netanyahu: 'Under my administration, the Iranian government had no money and no one bought their oil.' Netanyahu met with Biden and Harris at the White House; the U.S. emphasized its "ironclad commitment" to supporting Israel's security. Donald Trump hosted Netanyahu and his wife at his residence in Florida. The U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill sanctioning the International Criminal Court, which called for the arrest of Israeli leaders. The U.S. President rejected the International Criminal Court's jurisdiction regarding issuing warrants against Israeli officials. U.S. and Israeli defense ministers discussed Gaza; emphasizing the U.S.'s firm support for Israel.
