The New York Times Reports on the Arrest of Dozens of 'Prominent and High-Ranking' Islamic Republic Forces by the IRGC

The New York Times reported on the initiation of extensive investigations regarding the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran by the 'IRGC's Anti-Intelligence Organization,' stating that over 20 high-ranking officials have been arrested in these investigations. The New York Times emphasized that these high-profile arrests following Haniyeh's assassination indicate a 'devastating security failure' for the Iranian leadership. According to the newspaper, Haniyeh's assassination hours after the 'swearing-in' ceremony of the new government president in a heavily guarded area of the Iranian capital is considered 'a major failure.' The New York Times quoted two Iranian officials stating, 'The specialized intelligence unit of the IRGC has taken over the investigations and is pursuing suspects to reach the core members of the team that planned, assisted, and executed' this act. The newspaper stressed that if Israel can kill such an important guest on a day when the capital was under severe security measures in a highly secure complex equipped with bulletproof windows, air defense, and radar, 'then no one is truly safe in Iran.' Ismail Haniyeh, a senior Hamas leader, was killed early Wednesday, August 1, in Tehran. His body, which had traveled from Qatar to Iran to attend the 'swearing-in' ceremony of Masoud Pezeshkian, was buried in Qatar on Friday, August 4. The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7 (October 15 in the Iranian calendar) last year when militants from this Palestinian paramilitary group and its allies attacked southern Israel, killing 1,200 people and taking around 250 hostages. Approximately 120 hostages remain captive by Hamas forces in Gaza, and this group has not released any news or information about their status.
