The Revolutionary Court Sentences Varisheh Moradi to Death

The Kurdistan Human Rights Network announced that Varisheh Moradi, a Kurdish political prisoner accused of 'rebellion', has been sentenced to death by the Revolutionary Court judge. According to the report, the 15th branch of the Islamic Revolutionary Court of Tehran, presided over by Abolqasem Salavati, condemned Varisheh Moradi to death while he was not allowed to defend himself during the court sessions. Varisheh Moradi was arrested on July 31, 2023, in the suburbs of Sanandaj and was transferred to the women's section of Evin Prison on December 26, 2023, after completing the interrogation process at the Ministry of Intelligence detention center known as Ward 209. The first court session regarding the charges against this political activist was held on June 17 of this year in the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court in Tehran, where he was accused of membership in one of the opposition groups to the Islamic Republic and charged with rebellion. On August 7 of this year, following protests by female prisoners in Evin after learning about the execution of Reza Rasayi and clashes with prison guards, he was sentenced to six months of punitive imprisonment in a joint legal case with four other prisoners. Human rights media reported on Tuesday, October 30, that Varisheh Moradi ended his hunger strike after 20 days 'in respect of the requests of many activists.' He had been on hunger strike since October 11 in protest against his uncertainty, deprivation of visits with family and lawyer, which had been ordered by Judge Abolqasem Salavati since mid-May of this year, and the increase in death sentences in Iran. Kaveh Kermanshahi, an official of the Kurdistan Human Rights Network, wrote on social media platform X on Tuesday: 'According to one of the relatives of this political prisoner, he ended his hunger strike to respect the requests of political and civil activists and organizations inside and outside the country, as well as his fellow inmates in the women's section of Evin Prison.'
