The Second Meeting of U.S. and North Korean Leaders to Take Place in Hanoi, Vietnam

The President of the United States announced on Friday that his second meeting with the North Korean leader will take place on February 27 and 28 (8 and 9 Esfand) in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam. Donald Trump tweeted: "My representatives just left North Korea after a very successful meeting and agreement on the day and time of the second meeting with Kim Jong Un." He then added that he is looking forward to meeting with the North Korean leader and advancing the peace process. The first meeting between the leaders of the United States and North Korea took place in June of this year in Singapore, which was an unprecedented and historic event in the relations between the two countries. That meeting resulted in an agreement on the denuclearization of North Korea, but ambiguities about the implementation of this agreement still exist. During this period, both sides have been warning each other while also emphasizing their willingness to continue peace negotiations. At the end of January, the White House announced that the second meeting of the U.S. and North Korean leaders would be held in late February (the first half of Esfand), but the location of this meeting was still not specified. On the same day, Reuters reported that while the timing of the second meeting between Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un has been announced, there are no signs of a reduction in tensions between the two countries; the U.S. request for North Korea's denuclearization has not been implemented, and North Korea's request for a reduction in sanctions has also not yielded results so far. However, Mr. Trump claims that Kim Jong Un has promised that North Korea will not build any more nuclear weapons and will not conduct nuclear tests. The U.S. President tweeted on Friday evening: "North Korea, under the leadership of Kim Jong Un, will become a great economic power. He may surprise some, but he will not surprise me, as I have come to know him and am fully aware of his capabilities." Donald Trump ultimately stated: "North Korea will become another missile; an economic missile." Previously, Mr. Trump had referred to Kim Jong Un as the "Rocket Man," a reference to North Korea's numerous missile tests.
