The statement also emphasized that it is crucial for North Korea to demonstrate its sincere commitment to nuclear disarmament through real actions and to stress the need for reducing tensions. The Security Council members once again urged North Korea to refrain from any new nuclear and missile tests. The statement clarified that the Security Council is ready to impose new sanctions against North Korea. On Sunday, May 14, North Korea announced that it had successfully tested a 'new medium-to-long-range ballistic missile.' Pyongyang claims that U.S. territory is within the range of its missiles. In a statement released by North Korea's official news agency on Monday, it was mentioned that the recent missile test aimed to assess the capability of using 'heavy nuclear warheads on a large scale.' Reuters reports that the U.S. has begun discussions with China, a close ally of North Korea, to intensify sanctions against Pyongyang. Since Donald Trump took office, North Korea has conducted more than 10 missile tests. According to Reuters, the Trump administration has pressured Chinese officials to rein in their neighbor and warned that all options are on the table if North Korea continues to develop its nuclear and missile programs. To counter the North Korean threat, the U.S. has deployed the THAAD missile defense system, capable of targeting short- and medium-range ballistic missiles, in South Korea.
