In a briefing, the Secretary of Defense said, "We believe he is in North Korean custody, so we are closely monitoring the situation and working to inform the soldier's loved ones." Colonel Isaac Taylor, a spokesman for U.S. forces in Korea, said that American military personnel are "working with their counterparts in North Korea to resolve this issue." He also added, "We communicate with North Korea every day; all of this is part of the armistice agreement." This crossing occurs amid heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula, with the arrival of a U.S. ballistic missile submarine and the test launch of two ballistic missiles by North Korea early Wednesday morning.
