The Surgery to Separate Two Iranian Sisters Has Entered Its Most Critical Phase

The surgery to separate two Iranian sisters who are conjoined at the head has now entered its most critical phase, while surgeons have managed to overcome a significant obstacle. An international team of surgeons on Monday was able to reroute a blood vessel, the size of a finger, that connects the brains of the 29-year-old sisters named Ladan and Laleh. The surgeons have replaced a vessel that they had to separate from one of the sisters' heads during the procedure. Cutting through the thick skull took twice as long as expected. A spokesperson for Raffles Hospital in Singapore, where the surgery is taking place, told reporters that the condition of the conjoined Iranian twins is stable and the surgeons are satisfied with the progress and success of the surgery so far. The surgery began at noon local time on Sunday and is expected to last two to four days. Twenty-eight surgeons and specialists from Singapore, the USA, France, Japan, Switzerland, and Nepal are working for twenty-four hours in an operating room where classical music is played, without any rush. Creating another vessel that can return blood from the brain was considered one of the important issues of this surgery. This method has not previously been used on adults who are conjoined.
