The U.S. Accuses the Syrian Government of Mass Executions and Burning Opponents' Bodies

The United States has accused the Syrian government of mass executions of thousands of opponents and burning their bodies, describing Bashar al-Assad's regime as "immersed in a new phase of brutality." According to Reuters, the U.S. State Department announced that approximately 50 prisoners are hanged daily in the Saydnaya military prison, located 45 kilometers from Damascus. The department also released recently declassified photos showing that a facility for burning bodies has been established within the prison grounds. In this context, Stuart Jones, the acting head of the Near Eastern Affairs office at the State Department, stated that "the U.S. believes the construction of this crematorium is intended to conceal the number of people who are killed in this prison." Mr. Jones, who presented the Saydnaya prison photos to reporters on Monday, May 15, added that the Assad regime, with support from Russia and Iran, is "immersed in a new phase of brutality." Reports indicate that these photos, taken over the past four years, do not definitively identify the structure as a crematorium but display a building that could be used for such purposes. The new accusations from the U.S. government come about a week after the Pentagon announced that President Donald Trump ordered military weapons to be sent to Kurdish forces affiliated with the Syrian Democratic Party. Dana White, a Pentagon spokesperson, stated on Tuesday, May 9, that Mr. Trump had tasked the Defense Department with equipping Kurdish forces to achieve victory against the Islamic State group in Raqqa, the self-proclaimed capital of ISIS in northern Syria. Mr. Trump had promised during his presidential campaign that he would destroy the Islamic State if elected. In this context, predominantly Kurdish militants have reached "four kilometers" from Raqqa. Bashar al-Assad stated that the safe zone plan provides an opportunity for opponents to reconcile with the government. U.S.-backed forces in Syria have captured the city of Tabqa by pushing back ISIS. The Trump administration has agreed to send weapons to predominantly Kurdish militants in Syria, and the U.S. is "carefully reviewing" Russia's plan for safe zones in Syria.
