The U.S. Blames Iran for Cyber Attacks on Election Campaigns

Three U.S. intelligence agencies announced that Iran was behind cyber attacks on election campaign offices in the country, considering this action part of a broader intervention by the Islamic Republic. This issue was disclosed on the evening of Monday, August 29, in a joint statement from the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), the Office of the Director of National Intelligence, and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency. These three intelligence agencies emphasized that 'Iran seeks to create discord and undermine trust in democratic institutions' in the United States, stating in the joint statement: 'We have witnessed increasing aggressive activities from Iran during this election period.' The statement specified that the U.S. intelligence community attributes recent cyber operations against Donald Trump's campaign, the Republican candidate, to Iran. Trump's campaign office announced on August 20 that its internal communications had been hacked, attributing it to the Iranian government. Following this, the Washington Post reported that Iranian government-linked hackers had attempted to cyber infiltrate the Biden-Harris campaign months earlier. At that time, the FBI announced it was investigating these reports. The three U.S. intelligence agencies, in their joint statement, referred to a previous assessment indicating that the Iranian government considers this election period in the U.S. significant, stressing that Iran's cyber activities target both the general American public and election campaigns. According to the statement, Iran's goal with this cyber attack is not only to create discord in American society but also to shape the election outcome based on its potential impact on Iran's national security. The statement from U.S. intelligence agencies was published less than two weeks after Microsoft experts reported that hackers linked to the Islamic Republic attempted to infiltrate the account of a 'high-ranking official' in the U.S. presidential election campaign in June. According to Microsoft experts, 'a group managed by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps sent a targeted phishing email to one of the high-ranking officials in the presidential campaign' and 'another group linked to the IRGC compromised a state-level government account with minimal access permissions.' Google also reported separately that an Iranian group linked to the IRGC attempted to infiltrate the Gmail accounts of dozens of individuals associated with Joe Biden and Donald Trump. The Iranian representation at the United Nations reacted similarly in all these cases, stating: 'The Iranian government has no objective or motive to interfere in the U.S. presidential elections.' However, last Friday, OpenAI announced that it had identified and dismantled an Iranian infiltration campaign that used ChatGPT, the company's generative AI technology, to disseminate misinformation online, including regarding the U.S. presidential elections. According to the company, some operators attempted to use ChatGPT to create lengthy fake news stories and write comments for dissemination on social media. The companies X and Meta (owner of Instagram and Facebook) have not yet commented on the activities and closure of these accounts, but OpenAI states that these accounts no longer appear to be active on the social media platforms X and Instagram.
