The U.S. Calls for Elections in Ukraine

The United States is urging Ukraine to hold parliamentary and presidential elections, especially after establishing a ceasefire with Russia. Kate Klag, the U.S. special envoy for Ukraine and Russia, told Reuters, "Most democratic nations hold elections during wartime." He described the importance of this issue for democratic systems as "the beauty of a robust democracy." Donald Trump, the U.S. President, and Kate Klag have stated that they are busy planning a ceasefire agreement and its implementation in the coming months to end Russia's all-out invasion of Ukraine. They have not yet provided many details about their strategy to end the West's deadliest civil war in Europe since World War II. Reuters reported, citing two sources familiar with ongoing negotiations and a former U.S. government official, that Trump's plan is still under review and no final decision has been made in this regard. They added that Klag and other White House officials have recently discussed persuading Ukraine to hold elections as part of the ceasefire plan with Russia. The two officials, who requested anonymity, told Reuters that the White House is also considering establishing a preliminary ceasefire before a final agreement and a permanent ceasefire. If presidential elections are held in Ukraine, the elected president will be responsible for negotiations to sign a final agreement with Russia. It is unclear whether the Ukrainian government will agree to Trump's plan. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that his country could hold elections this year, but the precondition is the end of the war and the existence of strong security guarantees to prevent Russia from restarting the war. Reuters reported, citing two Ukrainian officials, that Trump's government has not yet officially requested to hold elections by the end of this year. Zelensky's five-year presidential term ends at the end of 2024. Parliamentary and presidential elections cannot be held under martial law, and Ukraine has been under martial law since the beginning of the Russian military invasion in February 2022.
