The U.S. Calls for the Release of Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize Winner

Abram Paley, Deputy Special Representative of the U.S. for Iran, once again called for the release of Narges Mohammadi, a Nobel Peace Prize winner and imprisoned human rights activist. In a message posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, January 12, he wrote: "We again call for the release of Narges Mohammadi, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and all prisoners who are unjustly imprisoned in Iran." Paley emphasized, "No one should be behind bars for exercising their human rights and enjoying fundamental freedoms." Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist, has been repeatedly arrested and imprisoned over the past two decades and continues to inform about the conditions of prisoners and comment on news and events despite being imprisoned in Evin Prison. Previously, Abram Paley condemned the death sentences issued for "four Iranian Kurdish citizens named Mohsen Malzoum, Pejman Fatehi, Vafa Azarbar, and Mohammad (Hajir) Farahmand." These four Kurdish citizens have been sentenced to death on charges such as "collaborating with Israel" and membership in the Kurdish "Komala" party. The Iran Human Rights Organization also condemned the issuance of death sentences for these four political prisoners and called for an appropriate response from the international community to the arbitrary executions in Iran. Mahmoud Amiri-Moghaddam, the director of this organization, stated, "In addition to the inhumanity of the death penalty, these four prisoners, like many others sentenced to death, have not received the slightest standards of fair trial, and their sentences are even illegal under the laws of the Islamic Republic." According to reports, Reza Rasayi, Mojahid Korkor, Farshid Hossein Zahi, and Mansour Dahmarde have recently been sentenced to death. The issuance and execution of death sentences have always faced international condemnation. Reports by Soran Khatri on the death sentences for four Kurdish citizens indicate that their confessions were "forced." The anniversary of the execution of Mohammad Mahdi Karami and Mohammad Hosseini; their charge was killing a Basij member.
