The U.S. Calls the Deployment of North Korean Forces to Russia for War Against Ukraine 'Dangerous'

The Deputy Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations warned on Monday that the deployment of military forces from North Korea to Russia for the war against Ukraine would be 'a very dangerous action and a concerning development.' According to Reuters, Robert Wood said at a UN Security Council meeting to discuss the Ukraine war, 'We are consulting with our allies and partners about the complexities and implications related to such an action.' Recently, reports have emerged about the presence of North Korean military forces inside Ukraine to assist the Russian army. Some reports even indicate that North Korean soldiers and officers have been killed or injured. The Interfax Ukraine news agency and the Kyiv Post reported last week that six North Korean officers were killed and three were injured on October 3 during a Ukrainian missile attack on a military training center in the Russian-occupied part of the Donbas region in eastern Ukraine. Sean South, a spokesperson for the U.S. National Security Council, noted on Friday, October 27, that the reports of North Korean soldiers in Russia participating in the war against Ukraine represent 'a dangerous development in the Russia-Ukraine war.' He added, 'We cannot confirm the accuracy of these reports, but if true, we will consult with our allies about the implications of such a move. What is clear is that such an action reflects Russia's increasing desperation and Moscow's disappointment in achieving victory against Kyiv.' U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken had previously described military cooperation among Iran, North Korea, and Russia as a threat to global peace and security, calling for international action against it. At a meeting of foreign ministers of UN Security Council member states regarding Ukraine, he stated, 'Tehran and Pyongyang's support helps Putin impose slaughter, suffering, and destruction on innocent men, women, and children in Ukraine.' Russia has used Iranian-made drones in its military aggression against Ukraine, raising concerns among Kyiv's supporting countries and leading to extensive sanctions against the Islamic Republic. On Monday, October 30, the U.S. Secretary of State announced a new aid package for Ukraine worth $400 million, emphasizing that the United States and over 50 other countries stand united with Ukraine, ensuring continued support in the coming months. U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin, who visited Kyiv, stated on Monday that Ukraine will receive what it needs to defend itself against the Russian invasion, reiterating that the future of Europe, NATO strengthening, and U.S. security are at stake. Simultaneously, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on Monday evening that the U.S. government is preparing a new aid package worth about $800 million to finance drone production for Ukraine. According to Reuters, he also noted in his nightly video address that this assistance is separate from the $400 million aid package previously announced by U.S. defense and foreign ministers on the same day. Russian drone attacks on Kyiv continued for the second consecutive night.
