The U.S. Deploys Over Five Thousand Soldiers at the Border with Mexico

A senior U.S. military official stated on Monday, October 29, that 5,200 troops will be sent to the shared border with Mexico to enhance security measures. According to Reuters, General Terrence O'Shaughnessy, head of the Northern Command of the U.S. Army, said on Monday that the President made it very clear that border security is national security. This military official emphasized that previously 800 troops had already been deployed to the Mexico border. The U.S. action to send troops to the Mexico border aims to prevent the entry of thousands of migrants from Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador who are currently heading towards the U.S. border. According to the Associated Press, while this caravan of migrants from Central America is slowly making its way to the U.S., the number of individuals in this caravan is decreasing. Meanwhile, Donald Trump, the President of the United States, tweeted on Monday regarding the movement of the thousands-strong caravan from Central America in Mexico, stating that no one will be accepted unless they act legally. The President claims that members of criminal groups and bad people are in this caravan heading towards our southern borders. Donald Trump, for whom immigration is one of the main policies of his administration, has previously warned that if the movement of the migrant caravan does not stop, U.S. foreign aid to the countries in the region will be halted, and the U.S.-Mexico border will be closed with the help of military forces. Reuters reports that Mr. Trump and other Republicans have tried to exploit this issue for political campaigning ahead of the U.S. midterm elections. The midterm elections, which will take place on November 6, will determine the fate of the legislative bodies in the U.S. currently controlled by Republicans.
