The U.S. Emphasizes the Need for a Diplomatic Solution to the War in Yemen

On Wednesday, April 3, the U.S. special envoy for Yemen, Tim Lenderking, emphasized the necessity of achieving a diplomatic solution to the country's civil war. According to Reuters, Lenderking stated that the designation of the Houthis as a terrorist organization by the United States exerts 'additional pressure' on the group and may prevent their attacks on ships in the Red Sea. The Iran-backed Houthis, who control the capital and parts of Yemen, have been attacking ships in international shipping lanes in the Red Sea since last fall in solidarity with the Hamas militant group in Gaza. Hamas, also supported by Iran, is listed as a terrorist organization by the United States, Israel, the European Union, the UK, Japan, Canada, and several other countries. Reuters noted that the Houthi attacks on ships have been accompanied by retaliatory strikes from the U.S. and the UK, which have targeted the group's positions multiple times. According to Lenderking, the goal of these retaliatory attacks is to diminish the Houthis' capability to strike ships in the Red Sea. After meetings in Saudi Arabia and Oman, Lenderking stated that Houthi attacks undermine the progress of peace in the broader Yemen conflict. He emphasized the need for a diplomatic solution, noting that there is no military solution for Yemen. Lenderking added that 'Saudi Arabia's mediation between the Houthis and the Yemeni government, recognized by the international community, gives hope that we can use this moment to move past current tensions.' He mentioned that due to the current crisis, ship docking at the port of Hodeidah has decreased by about 15%, posing challenges for humanitarian aid delivery in Yemen. The United States has warned Iran about any attacks on U.S. forces in the region. The U.S. has destroyed two Houthi drones supported by the Iranian government. CENTCOM reported that the Houthis attacked a Chinese oil tanker on Saturday. U.S. fighter jets targeted three warehouses in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen. CENTCOM's commander stated that Tehran is a supplier of weapons to the Houthis, and the alliance between Iran, China, and Russia is concerning.
