The U.S. FDA Seizes Counterfeit Versions of Weight Loss Drug 'Ozempic'

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in a statement that it has seized thousands of units of counterfeit 'Ozempic', a diabetes medication widely used for weight loss, which had been distributed through legitimate pharmaceutical sources. The FDA and the drug's manufacturer, 'Novo Nordisk', are currently testing these vials. According to the Associated Press, there is still no information regarding the nature, quality, or safety of these vials, but the FDA reported that five illnesses have been linked to these counterfeit drugs, none of which were serious. The regulatory agency stated that fake one-milligram semaglutide vials may still be available for sale and added that, in addition to the drug itself, the needles, labels, boxes, and accompanying health information are also counterfeit. Semaglutide, marketed as 'Ozempic', is prescribed for the treatment of type 2 diabetes and for weight control, mimicking the hormone 'GLP-1' that is secreted by the intestine after eating. This hormone performs various functions, including aiding insulin production, slowing gastric emptying, and lowering blood sugar levels. In recent months, there has been significant interest in the weight loss benefits of 'Ozempic', with numerous celebrities and public figures using it to achieve their ideal weight. Oprah Winfrey, a famous television personality, recently stated that she uses weight loss medications but did not specify which type. Another weight loss drug that has gained popularity is 'Wegovy', another product from 'Novo Nordisk'. The rising popularity of these drugs, especially Ozempic, has not only made it temporarily unavailable to diabetes patients but has also led to poisonings. A recent report from the American Poison Center, representing 55 poison centers in the United States, indicates that from January 1 to November 30 of this year, at least 2,941 Americans were exposed to an overdose of semaglutide.
