The U.S. Halts Exports of a Wide Range of Everyday Goods to Russia

On Friday, May 19, the Biden administration stopped exports of a wide range of consumer goods to Russia and added 71 companies to the trade blacklist. This comes as leaders of the 'Group of Seven' nations, who are attending a three-day meeting in Japan, announced new sanctions against Moscow due to the war in Ukraine. According to Reuters, the new restrictions on Russia include items that could be used to assist the Russian military, including everyday household items like clothes dryers, snowplows, and milking machines, which could have other applications in Russia's military industries. Targeted companies include aircraft repair and parts manufacturing plants, explosives factories, tractor and automotive manufacturing plants, shipbuilding facilities, and engineering centers in Russia. These measures are part of a new round of sanctions and export controls by the United States and other countries in response to Russia's attack on Ukraine, designed to weaken Russia's industrial base and its ability to continue the war. The United States and a coalition of 37 other countries have imposed unprecedented export controls on Russia since the invasion in February 2022. These new actions come as the United States and other wealthy 'Group of Seven' nations agreed to intensify sanctions against Russia at the Japan meeting. Last week, U.S. officials arrested two Russian men residing in Florida for allegedly sending parts and components of American aircraft to Russian airlines in violation of export controls. According to prosecutors, the two men, who attempted to send packages through the Maldives, claimed that these goods were for their customers in Turkey and not for Russia.
