The U.S. Halts Information Exchange with Ukraine

The head of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) stated that the U.S. has not only halted military aid to Ukraine but has also restricted information exchange with the country. These remarks came a day after Donald Trump, the U.S. President, read a letter from Volodymyr Zelensky, the President of Ukraine, during his speech in Congress, in which Zelensky expressed his willingness for peace negotiations with Russia and signing an agreement regarding Ukraine's mineral resources with Washington. John Ratcliffe, the CIA director, said in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday, March 6, that the halt in military aid and information exchange was due to Trump's concerns about Zelensky's commitment to peace following their unsuccessful meeting at the White House. In this interview, Ratcliffe stated, 'I think this halt will be lifted in the military and intelligence domains. We will work shoulder to shoulder with Ukraine to counter the aggression in that country and create conditions for these peace negotiations to move forward.' Western military intelligence has so far played a vital role in Ukraine's defensive capabilities against the Russian invasion and targeting Russian forces. Ratcliffe did not specify which parts of the intelligence partnership with Kyiv were affected by this decision, but Western media have reported that the imposed restrictions are significant. The Daily Mail reported that Washington has simultaneously barred Britain from transferring U.S. information to Ukrainian officials. Mike Waltz, a national security advisor to Trump, who had heavily criticized Zelensky after tensions between him and the U.S. President at the White House, also told Fox News that the ban on U.S. military aid to Ukraine could be lifted. Waltz also mentioned that if we can put some measures on the table to build trust between the two sides, Trump will conduct a thorough review regarding lifting these restrictions. He further stated that 'we must ensure both sides negotiate sincerely for a temporary peace and then a permanent one.' The Ukrainian President has repeatedly stated his commitment to achieving 'sustainable peace,' including in the letter that Trump read in Congress on Tuesday. However, the U.S. President has shown that he wants to use Washington's leverage to achieve a quick peace and end this three-year war, which he has described as 'ridiculous.' In a tense meeting on March 1 at the White House, Trump told Zelensky that without U.S. assistance, he has no 'winning card' to end the war. However, Trump made no mention of this severe dispute in his speech in Congress, while Zelensky later expressed regret over how this negotiation was conducted.
