The U.S. Releases $3.5 Billion Budget for Military Equipment Purchases by Israel

The U.S. State Department announced that Washington is releasing a $3.5 billion budget allocated for the purchase of American weapons and military equipment by Israel. This budget comes months after it was approved by the U.S. Congress and at a time when Israel and regional countries are preparing for a potential attack by the Islamic Republic or Hezbollah, following the deaths of senior Hamas and Hezbollah leaders in Tehran and Beirut. CNN had previously reported on the allocation of this amount, which comes from a $14 billion supplemental military budget for Israel. The U.S. House of Representatives approved a $14.3 billion aid bill for Israel in its war against Hamas, a group supported by the Islamic Republic, on November 2 of last year. According to CNN, Israel will procure systems with this budget that are currently under construction and are unlikely to be delivered for several years, but this supplemental budget also includes billions of dollars worth of equipment that the U.S. Department of Defense, the Pentagon, can supply from its reserves to Israel on a faster timeline. A spokesperson for the U.S. State Department stated that on Thursday, August 9, they informed Congress that the government intends to release billions of dollars in foreign military aid to Israel. This budget is being provided amid rising tensions in the Middle East, with many fearing the expansion of war, in addition to Gaza, which has already seen tens of thousands killed and a humanitarian crisis. Following the killing of Ismail Haniyeh, head of Hamas's political bureau in Tehran, and Fouad Shukr, military commander of Hezbollah in Beirut, and the threats from the Islamic Republic and its proxy groups for retaliation against Israel, concerns about the outbreak of a wider war in the Middle East have increased. Israel has not yet claimed responsibility for the killing of Ismail Haniyeh. In recent days, the United States has emphasized that a ceasefire agreement in Gaza has reached its final stages and that the Islamic Republic and Israel should not jeopardize this agreement by escalating tensions. The Presidents of the U.S. and Egypt, along with the Emir of Qatar, called on August 9 for the finalization of the ceasefire agreement and the release of hostages in Gaza, stressing that 'a proper framework agreement is now on the table, and only the details of its implementation need to be finalized.' They insisted that 'no more time should be wasted' and added that 'no excuses from any party for further delays are acceptable.' U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also previously stated, 'Negotiations for a ceasefire in Gaza and the exchange of hostages have reached their final stage, and there is now a consensus to avoid any escalation of conflict in the Middle East.'
