The U.S. Sanctions an Israeli NGO and a Settler Official for 'Violence in the West Bank'

On Wednesday, the United States imposed sanctions on an Israeli NGO and a Jewish settler security official in the West Bank. This action is part of Washington's recent efforts to address extremist violence by Jewish settlers against Palestinians. According to U.S. State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller, the organization 'Hashomer Yosh', which claims to support settlers, has provided material assistance to an unauthorized outpost in the West Bank that was previously subject to sanctions. Yitzhak Levi Pilant, the security coordinator for the Itamar settlement, is another individual who has been sanctioned. In February, he led a group of armed settlers and attempted to drive Palestinians from their lands by creating roadblocks and conducting armed patrols. Miller stated, 'The extremist violence of settlers in the West Bank causes severe human suffering, undermines Israel's security, and diminishes the prospects for peace and stability in the region.' He also urged Israel to hold those responsible for this violence accountable. The sanctions block these individuals' assets in the U.S. and prohibit Americans from engaging with them. These sanctions were imposed under an executive order signed by Joe Biden in February to combat violence in the West Bank. In response to these sanctions, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that Israel would pursue the imposition of sanctions against its citizens with utmost seriousness and intends to have serious discussions with U.S. officials about this matter. U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken also expressed disappointment over Israel's announcement of plans to build new housing units in the West Bank, emphasizing that these plans are detrimental to achieving sustainable peace. The United Nations Human Rights Office, in a report published on March 9, stated that the establishment and expansion of Israeli settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem constitute a 'war crime' under international law. Volker Turk, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, noted in this report that 'the West Bank is currently trapped in a crisis. However, the violence of settlers and settler-related violence has reached a shocking new level that jeopardizes any practical possibility of establishing a sustainable Palestinian state.'
