The U.S. Sanctions Five Companies Linked to Iran's Missile Program

On Thursday, January 4, the U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned five Iranian companies due to their involvement in the development of the country's ballistic missile program. According to Reuters, U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin stated that these sanctions target key companies participating in the ballistic missile program, which the Iranian government prioritizes over addressing the economic situation of its people. The companies sanctioned by Washington include Shahid Islamic Research Center, Shahid Khazari Industries, Shahid Moghadam, Shahid Saniekhani, and Shahid Shushtari, all of which are subsidiaries of the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group, previously sanctioned by the U.S. However, Mnuchin also announced that sanctions related to human rights violations against Iran would be imposed soon. Nikki Haley, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, on December 14, presented missile remnants to reporters, claiming they were from a ballistic missile launched by the Houthis towards Riyadh. The components of this missile bore the markings of the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group. Haley stated that this missile was the same ballistic missile launched by the Houthis at Riyadh airport and had the logo of the Shahid Bagheri Industrial Group, matching the specifications of Iranian missiles. The U.S. Ambassador emphasized that 'Iran has violated the Security Council resolution and the JCPOA,' adding that 'the world sees that the JCPOA has not changed Iran's behavior, and Iran continues its destabilizing actions in Yemen, Iraq, Syria, and Lebanon.' According to Haley, there is no terrorist group in the region that Iran does not support, referring to Tehran's backing of groups such as Hezbollah in Lebanon and Palestinian groups like Hamas and Islamic Jihad. Iran denies involvement in terrorist activities and interference in the internal affairs of regional countries, including military assistance to the Houthis in Yemen, and instead considers the U.S. role in the region as 'destructive.' Following Haley's remarks, Iran's mission to the United Nations rejected her statements as 'irresponsible, provocative, and destructive.' Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia welcomed the U.S. Ambassador's comments and condemned Iran's actions in supporting the Houthi militia.
