The U.S. Sanctions Iranian and Russian Entities for Alleged Election Interference

The United States has announced sanctions against entities in Iran and Russia accused of attempting to interfere in this year's U.S. elections. The U.S. Department of the Treasury stated in a release on Tuesday, January 1, that one of the subunits of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) known as the 'Cognitive Design Production Center' and the International Non-Profit Geopolitical Center, linked to the Russian military intelligence agency, sought to 'create socio-political tensions and influence American voters in the 2024 U.S. elections.' Alongside these two entities, two Russian citizens associated with the Russian military intelligence agency have also been added to the U.S. sanctions blacklist. The Treasury Department noted that the IRGC subunit has been planning to influence the recent U.S. presidential elections since at least 2023, while the Russian entity has disseminated misinformation about electoral candidates and has directed and financially supported deepfake programs. The department emphasized that the International Non-Profit Geopolitical Center in Russia also manipulated a video to raise 'baseless accusations' against a presidential candidate in the 2024 elections, although it did not specify which candidate was targeted. In the U.S. presidential elections, Kamala Harris, the Vice President from the Democratic Party, and Donald Trump, the former President from the Republican Party, were candidates, with Trump ultimately winning the race. Bradley Smith, the Acting Under Secretary of the Treasury for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence, stated that the governments of Iran and Russia have attempted to sow 'division' among the American people by targeting U.S. electoral processes and institutions through campaigns of targeted misinformation. He asserted that the U.S. will remain vigilant against adversaries seeking to 'weaken our democracy.' U.S. officials have repeatedly warned ahead of the presidential elections that the Islamic Republic and Russia are attempting to interfere in the elections. According to U.S. intelligence officials and cybersecurity experts, the broad campaign by the Islamic Republic of Iran aims to exacerbate distrust in the U.S. democratic system and exploit deepening social divides in the country. The Islamic Republic has previously dismissed these claims as 'baseless and inaccurate.'
