The U.S. Warns North Korea Against Engaging in 'Provocative Actions'

After the North Korean government announced that it would resume plutonium production and high-enriched uranium enrichment at one of its key nuclear facilities, Washington has warned Pyongyang against taking any provocative actions. Josh Earnest, the White House spokesperson, stated on September 15 that North Korea 'must refrain from actions that only lead to increased tensions in the region and focus on fulfilling its international obligations.' On the same day, prior to the U.S. warning, North Korea announced that its plutonium production and high-enriched uranium facilities at the Yongbyon nuclear center had been 'recovered, modified, or adjusted and have resumed normal operations.' Previously, a prominent North Korea monitoring group had indicated signs that the country was re-producing plutonium to potentially increase its nuclear arsenal. Concurrently with Washington's new warning to Pyongyang, a recent report has emerged regarding the commencement of construction for a new nuclear facility in the country. According to South Korea's state news agency, Yonhap, the Institute for Science and International Security, based in the U.S. and focused on combating the proliferation of nuclear weapons, stated that the new facilities at Yongbyon would likely be used for 'isotope separation, including tritium (an isotope of hydrogen).' The 'Yongbyon Nuclear Research Center' is the main hub of North Korea's nuclear activities and is located in the northern part of the country. The White House spokesperson reiterated that the U.S. and global stance is unwavering, and North Korea, as a nuclear-armed state, is unacceptable. North Korea has previously threatened the U.S. and its main allies in East Asia, particularly South Korea and Japan. In recent weeks, South Korea has warned that its northern neighbor is constructing a launch pad, likely for a new intercontinental missile that is larger than previous missiles, suggesting that its range may also be greater. Kim Min-sak, spokesperson for the South Korean presidential office, stated on Tuesday that such an action would be considered a 'serious provocation.' However, he emphasized that Seoul has yet to see any signs that Pyongyang would proceed with the launch of this potential missile.
