The Uncertain Situation of Eman Jalali Nejad, Imprisoned Teacher in Ahvaz, Continues

Reports received by Voice of America regarding Eman Jalali Nejad Alamii, a teacher from Zahedan imprisoned in Shiban Prison in Ahvaz, indicate the uncertainty of this political prisoner. According to these reports, he was accepted into the education system of Khuzestan Province three years ago and has been an art teacher at Amir Kabir Technical School in Ahvaz. In April of this year, he was arrested along with a student named Mehdi Mimar and seven students. The students have been released on bail, but Eman Jalali Nejad Alamii and Mehdi Mimar remain in custody. They are accused of actions related to the nationwide protests following the death of Mahsa Amini while in police custody in 2022. Additionally, this teacher has been charged with 'corruption on earth, conspiracy to commit a crime against security,' 'membership in opposition groups,' and 'propaganda against the regime,' which is set to be addressed in the Fourth Branch of the Revolutionary Court of Khuzestan, which has been without a judge for about two months. Mr. Jalali Nejad Alamii has also been accused of 'manufacturing explosive materials (Molotov cocktails) and possessing an electric shocker,' for which he was sentenced to 3 years and 6 months in a criminal court. After that, a bail order was issued for him, which is currently under appeal. This ruling has been issued against this teacher despite the absence of any fire related to the charges, and it is solely based on the coerced confession of one of the students regarding the construction of something referred to as a Molotov cocktail included in his file. Meanwhile, Eman Jalali Nejad Alamii's parents have rented a house in Ahvaz for about ten months and have tried every avenue, but have not achieved any results. The report indicates that Mr. Jalali Nejad Alamii has a history of brain injury and his condition is special. Previously, the Coordinating Council of Iranian Teachers' Trade Unions announced on their Telegram channel that security pressures on this art teacher have increased and he has been deprived of access to his most basic rights. Earlier, Farzaneh Zilabi, Mr. Jalali Nejad's lawyer, stated regarding the 'ambiguous status of the case' and 'lack of sufficient evidence to prove the charges' that her client's access to the cultural section of the prison has been revoked and he has also been denied access to the central library.
