The Underprivileged: The Main Victims of Executions

Dozens of human rights organizations decided 15 years ago to designate October 10 as the World Day Against the Death Penalty in a global coalition aimed at advocating for the abolition of this punishment worldwide. This year, October 10 coincides with Mehr 18, as the use of the death penalty continues in some countries, including Iran. This punishment, according to human rights advocates, is 'discriminatory and inhumane' and violates the right to life. The Global Coalition Against the Death Penalty has raised the issue of poverty and its connection to this punishment this year. Many human rights advocates state that the death penalty is directly related to poverty and deprivation, and the victims of this punishment are often the underprivileged and marginalized individuals. In 2016, 23 countries around the world carried out executions, with Iran standing second globally after China, executing 567 people, which is significantly higher than the number of executions in Iraq, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia. This year, as the World Day Against the Death Penalty arrives, 104 countries have abolished the death penalty, and dozens of other countries have not carried it out for years; however, Iran still ranks first in the world in terms of executions per capita.
